Podiatry
The Podiatry Clinic at the UConn Health Center renders
services to over 1,000 patients per year and is an integral
aspect of the dermatology services offered at UConn.
Dermatologic and general complaints of the foot are managed by
full-time UConn faculty and residents in the clinics of the
Department of Dermatology. Diabetic foot care and general
preventative care services are emphasized in the clinic while
special procedures including nail and skin reconstruction are
also available.
Special services are available to children for the care of
ingrown nails and warts. Adults are offered focused care
directed towards treating the complex array of structural
problems which can develop in this age group. Elderly patients
receive optimized care of diabetic, vascular and neurologic foot
problems and are followed closely to prevent development of
complications.
There are three main causes of foot disease in the United
States:
1) Infectious - Viral (warts) and fungal (athlete's foot)
infections are highly common.
2) Structural - Changes in the bony structures of the foot
often lead to ingrown nails or heel pain.
3) Diabetes - The leading cause of limb loss in America is a
serious disease which lends itself to multiple changes in the
foot.
The Podiatry Clinic at UConn is designed to deliver optimized
care for both common and rare foot disorders.
